Introduction Rolling Mills


In order to feed the rolling mill with a billet at a deformable temperature, billets are reheated inside a reheating furnace. The rolling process of long products of steel consists of feeding the billets through two rolls which are rotating at the same speed but in opposite directions, the rolled stock is reduced by pressure, until the desired shape of final product. Afterwards, the hot bar is cooled at the cooling bed, cut to commercial length and straightened so that it can achieve the final dimensions and tolerances and finally packed at the evacuation area to be stored or transported.

Rolling can be either continuous rolling, which consist on rolling the bar at the rolling mill in one single direction throughout the roughing, intermediate and finishing stands, or discontinuous rolling, consisting on alternated rolling stands in the roughing mill, normally composed of two-high and three-high stands. Subsequent phases are continuous.
